A Challenge To Joell Ortiz

Whaddup B? Our good homie Dallas was the first person to ever put me on to you a coupla years ago. I checked your performance at Fort Greene Park two summers ago. I even brought my kids with me. No lie, you killed it homie! I've been following your work ever since. I truly dug your album "The Brick: Bodega Chronicles" as well. Very solid work for a first album. Me being a Brooklyn dude for life, and having had the opportunity to have worked with some of the best that BK has had to offer (Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G.), I can honestly say with utmost sincerity that you rep our borough well. A salute and props on that.

On top of that, whose effin with Slaughterhouse? Nigga, a four man crew consisting of solid emcees is dangerous and I'm grateful to you, Joe Buddens, Crooked I and Royce The 5'9" for that. There hasn't been a crew bringing it like ya'll in like... forever. That "Move On" joint is on instant classic status. Thanks for that as well. Slaughterhouse is THE rap super group and I will be checking for ya'll like a fiend.

Plus, I just now downloaded your latest mixtape, "Joell Ortiz Covers The Classics (Hosted By DJ Green Lantern)" via Miss Info. I haven't had a chance yet to listen to it in it's entirety, but judging from your previous body of work as well as the buzz it's getting, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Plus, you get props just on the artwork alone. I'm remain very impressed.

I just now read your comment you wrote in connection with my Eminem "Relapse" review. I'm glad that you read the Daily Mathematics. I do have to say that I'm surprised at your reaction though. Disappointed as well. Especially this part:

"maybe if your gettin 2 grown and have 4 kids a wife and a friend in the hospital maybe you shouldnt listen to rap anymore and pick up a Celine dion cd or some shit because u obviously have lost touch with rap good rap music 2/5? for real what did u give lil wayne? Stop being a hater Combat WACK"

For real B? I'm a hater now? I shouldn't listen to rap anymore? Plus I'm whack? All behind my review? Cool. I'ma let that fly on the strength of my respect for you and our peoples. But. Let me be clear, there's no hate or whack here potna. I ain't a new jack either. If Eminem isn't in my top 10 list, he's at least in my top 20. Dude in his prime would murder almost anyone, bar none. But you know this. On top of that, Dr. Dre remains my favorite hip hop producer of all time. And that stands even though he hasn't dropped anything recently that matches his past classics.

When "Relapse" landed in my hands, please believe that I "ripped" the packaging off, eager to listen to that "heat" that I expected from Em and Dre's reunion. I went in with full concentration my dude. What I heard though, was very much sounding like a poor version of Em's classic "The Marshall Mathers LP" or "The Slim Shady LP". Now a poor sounding version of "The Marshall Mathers LP" could might of been hot in 2000, but it's 2009! Ain't no one checking for that shit today. Unless they are part of that die hard crew of Eminem Stans. Maybe it's just that I expected too much from Em and Dre and "Relapse", in my opinion, proved to be a major let down. What's really funny though is that, in your comment, you claim that you're not a huge Eminem fan. However, most (if not all) of the shots fired my way in connection with my review came from certified Stans. So I'm asking you Mr. Ortiz, are you a closet Eminem Stan?

What I'd like to do, Joell, and with your permission of course, is to challenge you as to the merits of your claims in calling me a hater. And whack. And a new jack. When you have the chance, please go through my entire body of work as the blogger known as Combat Jack. If you can present to me and the readers a clear and systemic pattern of hate seeping through my words, then I will fall back and accept that I am a hater. And that I'm whack. And that I'm a new jack. And I don't need to be listening to rap no more. See, I'm giving you a fair chance for you to prove your words right and me wrong. Back them shits up my dude. Now, you don't necessarily have to accept this challenge, shit we all have more important shit to do. But if you can entertain me (and the blogosphere) just a bit, the challenge is officially placed and firmly on the table. I'll even up the ante and say here and now, that if you do accept this challenge and are able to clearly prove to me and the world all that you claim, that I'm a hater, that I'm whack and that I need to retire from rap, I will officially retire from Hip Hop, Rap and blogging. Word Bond (no 50 Cent). In the event though, that you are unable to back up the validity of your words, then I wager that you officially record a record proudly declaring yourself as one of Eminem's biggest Stans ever. And that you personally record a Combat Jack fan record. I really need my own theme song right about now and it would be a great honor if you were the one that recorded it. You game?

The ball is in your court now. Please feel free in proving me as being a hater and as whack. Simple as that. And please understand that this is no shots fired. I wouldn't do that, especially since you're that nice of an emcee from the mighty borough of BK capable of easily destroying me in one verse. Just a friendly gentleman's challenge. What's it going to be sir? Until then, I'm claiming you as "Joell Ortiz, The Official Em Stan".

And as per your request for me to "pick up a Celine Dion cd or some shit", heh. That won't happen, only because I'll be too busy banging "Joell Ortiz Covers The Classics". "Crime Pays" too.

Get at me Joell. I'm waiting.

UPDATE: Joell's people got at my people (Dallas) and was like "WTF is CJ doing going at Joell Ortiz?!?" They clarified that they ain't that type of blog cats to be leaving no disrespectful comments on blogger's comment sections. I respect that. I respect them too. I take back everything I said. Joell, that mixtape is a gem too potna. I needed that. Still looking forward to that Slaughterhouse joint. Respect.

Fuck though. I'm thinking that I really need a theme song now.

UPDATE #2: Last I checked, Eminem's "Relapse" still sucked.

CJ u slammed CRIME PAYS TOO . are u an undercover killa stan? i thought u were harsh with ems review .. but i do not disagree . the instrumentals were good . not mind blowning or paradigm shifing which is what we all expected . at least it was better than encore . which wasnt that bad but rather disappointing .

  2. I fucks with Joell but c'mon, it's clear: Em is one of the greats but this LP was Doo! I'm sure Relapse 2 will be better. I mean after 6 LP's (including "Infinite")who wants to hear the same poppin' pills, my mother's a bitch, Mariah, records. Skills aside, the shit is tired already.

  3. Jack are you really that foolish to think that was REALLY Joell Ortiz? Its not. Joell barely can use a computer- that shit aint him. For a brilliant guy you sure are gullable.

  4. This is clearly a case of crossed wires here. This jawn is a misunderstanding and a jump to posting a comment. I can understand why people would be disappointed in Em's new album. I was to a lesser degree because much of the album could've played in 2007 just as well as 2009. People were generally jump overjoyed to hear dude rap again after 5 years in my opinion to properly gauge that album. Dre beats? Just happy to hear 'em...as if it made the possibility of "Detox" was realer or closer. Yeah, right!

Either way, I hope this whole issue gets resolved, fam. *Plays "Joell Ortiz Covers The Classics"*

  9. Word Is Bawn!...Combat Jack's theme by J.O.?!?!? nice! That Em joint is hot gahbij. but then, I never was a fan of Eminem, so i'm a lil biased....and why wouldn't Joell write that? As much as rap dudes try to front like blogs are beneath them, they read and pay attention to the blogosphere just like you and I.

  10. I still don't believe that was actually Joell, though.

  11. Its not Joell homey, there are things in life I can guarantee you and that's one of them. Trust me. Please delete this post, your blogs too dope to get bogged down with this kind of shit. I reiterate, its not Joell.

  14. As someone who has only visited your blog upon hearing all the hate about your review of relapse and upon you challenging a great MC, this shit is ridiculous. Your relapse review was ridiculous, it showed no sense of you being a professional journalist, it was just more along the lines of tired ass one liner comments hating on the album without really backing up your words or making much of any comment at all about the actual RAPPING going on. Now, I have never bought an Em album before and I have never really been the hugest fan of his....but....this shit has been on repeat since it leaked and just because I support good hiphop, I'll make sure I buy it in order to help support its sales and show people that good hiphop still sells.

Step your game up. I expected something more out of that review, not for the reviewer to give up halfway through. I also was very disappointed with what you said about a lot of the songs. And for the record, MMLP > Relapse > SSLP > TES > Encore. Yes, I am serious. And I doubt Joell will have time to go through all your blog posts and pick out each and every individual instance of you being a hater....dude is too busy making dope music.

  19. Combat Reggie aint a journalist, he a lawyer/attorney an this blog is just a method of him expressing his own personal opinion as a veteran in the rap game, having been involved with some of the biggest rap acts to walk this earth.

Y'all need to grow up, he didn't like the album that's all.

P.S I doubt an would be extremely surprised if that was Joell, he comes across as mad respectful in all his interviews

    ReplyDelete
  20. Combat Jack, before you ripped open the packaging off the Relapse CD, were you aware of the concept of the album?

I say this because a lot of people (both Em stans & haters) missed what Em was "relapsing" from.

It also might make better sense why the album didn't seems to show any growth in content. So allow me to copy/paste this short statement from Em himself describing the story behind Relapse:

"The main theme of the record is a lot to do with me getting sober. Like giving up drugs and also kinda relapsing back into the first two albums, it's like relapsing back to the first two albums. The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP. It kinda feels like, the way these records feel it's like, to me, they kinda feel like those two records." (Skyrock)

With that in mind, a couple of records on the album admittedly feel outta place, but for the most part, the rest of the album suits the concept.

So for those who felt like his content showed no growth, should realize it's basically part of the concept, because he keeps "relapsing" back to his SSLP & MMLP personas. Which is why most of the content on Relapse already sounds familiar.

Other than that, the only other complaint I've been hearing a lot is Em's usage of the accent. However, I've read very few reviews (personal & professional) remark that they had prior understanding of the concept behind Relapse before listening.

Perhaps it wasn't obvious, or people didn't get the memo, but if anyone's truly an Em stan, they should've been aware of this concept since Em's been on his promo tour for the past month answering these sorts of questions.

    ReplyDelete
  21. ^^^^I think the concept is very clear but cotdamn, that wigger has been relapsing for 11 years and 6 LP's. WTF? And what if on Relapse 2 he does the same shit? Then what?

  22. Annonymous, beef? who said anything about beef? I agree, Joell IS one of the nice guys in this game, it doesnt mean he has to agree with everything. But everything that is contrary is not beef...geez. and stand-up dudes STAND by what they say and refrain from being Annonymous.

  23. I gotta ask... anyone can type in a random name for a comment... was that DEFINITELY the real Joell? Just curious... also, Joell is definitely 1 of the dopest in the game and slaughterhouse is the hip-hop I'm most checking for in 09, individually and collectively... either way, just curious, was that def the real Joell?

Why's so many people getting all pussified over an album review? Everyone's got a right to an opinion, right? Agree or disagree and move on. Niggas sounding like 2Pac knob-slobbers up in this bitch. True Stans.
Speaking of.. I have a feeling the Joell Ortiz comment from the Review was an Ortiz Stan... I see no reason for the real JO to run off at the mouth like that. Using someone else's nickname is disrespectful. If you're gonna use an Avatar, come up with your own shit or be inventive... or be truthful: call yourself Joell Ortiz Stan.

  28. The Real Jalil (Whodini)May 13, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Uh... why would the real Joell, who-- let's get real-- has enough problems trying to come up in the collapsing hip-hop biz all of a sudden come out of nowhere to take shots at CJ?! Especially over an Eminem album; "loyalty" to fucking Dre? Steroid RAGE?! Hey, maybe Dre laced Joell with something else besides weak-ass beats and false promises.

I'm joking cuz I'm a Joell and Combat Jack fan but I gotta believe it was a fake JO until it's proven otherwise. Still a good post, CJ-- gotta admire a dude (ll) not afraid of a substantive beef (not the tired 50 Cent variety, which only raised Rawse's profile).

  29. I really hate the word "hate". When couldnt a dude voice his opinion? If ur album is wack, its wack. Why I gotta hate? IT'S WACK. When u like a album, ur a STAN? I never heard shit like this B4...I loved Pun, my man didnt really dig him, that just makes me say, word? U dont feel him? Thats it. Each his own..That dont mean he a hater or Im a Stan. 42. This bullshit would never happen in Rock N Roll because real Rock fans know how to distinguish quality music from subject matter. A credible reviewer (not that I'm giving this pedantic no-name idiot that distinction) would never be so ignorant as to put his moral view of the subject matter before the actual quality of the music presented. Most of the top ten greatest names in rock ever all had many songs covering extremely dark (even some bordering on satanic) subject matter (jimmy page, tony iomme, jimmy hendrix, and many many more). That doesn't mean they didn't have millions of fans who were good people who loved their music and acknowledged the greatness of it. In Rock people know how to appreciate the quality of music from the subject matter which is mostly entertainment. In contrast, this faggot likes artists who actually glorify drug dealing, murder, etc. So whats worse Eminem exaggerating his experiences for the purpose of entertainment and creativity or some scumbags who actually respesent evil shit and sell it to kids?

I never knew who combat jack was prior to his ignorant review of Relapse. Needless to say I won't be checking in anymore. This loser says Em is not in his top ten all time? There isn't a hater of Eminem I've come across that is even that ignorant. From a talent standpoint, in terms of rapping/lyrics he is easily one of the best if not the best. For example, what he spit on the song underground is vintage Slim Shady lyrically. Its beyond what any other emcee is capable of doing in my eyes lyrically and his flow is ridiculous to say the least on the majority of the album. Musically it is very well produced overall.

If you disagree with the subject matter or don't like the album for any reason that is fine and even understandable. But the majority of people I have come across seem to agree that the album from a technical and musical standpoint is very good. So the least you should give it even if you totally hate the subject matter is a 3/5 (to me 4/5 would be more accurate). To give it a 2/5 just totally detracts from any credibility you may have to review hip hop albums and it only proves how ignorant you are when it comes to the music.

The review should be based first and foremost on the quality of the music before it is about how much you agree or disagree with the subject matter.

Now he gets mad at Joell Ortiz(another quality emcee)for thinking the review was ridiculous. Smh... This dude is a bum.

I challenge Combat Jackoff to find a life or at least another way to occupy his time aside from posting uneducated nonsensical ignorant rants about a musical culture he is obviously too ignorant to understand or appreciate and clearly unqualified to review.

You really think anything you do can take anything away from Eminem?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Damn, so I read this article this afternoon at work and I was thinking "damn, this dude Combat Jack is right"...but that was before I listened to the cd...

To some extent I still agree with Jack, but it just dawned on me that it's not really Eminem's fault - Combat Jack has kids, a mortgage, and all this other ish, obviously this type of rap isn't going to appeal to him anymore. You're getting old bro, its all good though, Rolling Stones said time is on your side, be easy. But on the reals, Eminem's flow on this cd is still just plain amazing. I was just listening to Medicine Ball and then Stay Wide Awake, his subject matter isn't exactly relevant to my life, but then again that would mean neither is Camron's. I dont sell crack, I dont carry guns, and I don't get head in the whip on a regular basis (once in a few I get the old lady to chop, I digress....) and I don't rock ice. What's appealing about rappers is that they can flow and they have a lifestyle that interests us. Eminem is plain nice, I don't kill women or do pills, but I still enjoy listening to his shit...I wanted so bad to hate this cd, and then I heard the "Paul" skit and lol'd for a hot minute...herbals may have exaggerated my reaction, but yo, don't hate on that cd, and check yourself before you judge other people...you're old and you're out of touch with this music, not hip-hop, or the history of hip-hop, but def with this music right here from Slim Lamey.

    easy.

The thing that made Em a great lyricist wasn't just his shock value, but his wordplay and cadences. "Lose Yourself" was the best of Em being Em and a classic song to boot. I dare any of y'all to tell me he isn't just a shell of that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Also this wife kids and mortgage and shit is overgrown bullshit. I noticed Ortiz is covering the classics and him and Buddens is out there on youtube complaining about everything under the sun that's wrong with HipHop today.......Eminem was made a mega star and the people who made him one could give a fuck less about HipHop anyway. That aint even they concern. Eminem been catering to them ever since his 3rd LP and 1st single.............Y'all gotta understand that Eminem tho dope was not the best to ever do it, no matter how much y'all wanna Elvis him up

  48. I've been listening to hip hop for 18 years, and that review was dead on fam. The album has maybe 2-3 high points, and the rest just isn't that good. Beat's are not that great, Em's lyrical content is the same as 6 years ago. Point blank period, I fucks with Joell (pause), but he's dead wrong on this one. And why is it so insane to say Em is not top 10, I got 10 ahead of him easy in no order. BIG, Jay-Z, Nas, Tupac, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Masta Ace, Scarface, Ghostface, shit Ras Kass was doing the Em shtick before Em was, just happens that Em's white. Real talk.

Don’t forget BIG L, Pun, Pharoah Monche ( EM bit his flow hard [II] )

Anyway, EM didn’t come correct this time around (well for the last 2 efforts as well in fact). As far as I am concerned he is doing a Nas right about now. And that is the problem with rap. Fans are dick riding too much. If an artist drops hot garbage they should be made aware of it. Plus I don’t buy the “dopest white boy to do it shit, even more than any nigga to do it” the media was pushing. Fuck that. EM don’t even touch BIG’s Ready to Die or Nas’ Illmatic with this effort, so this album should be called what it is. A weak effort, but a STAN will be ok with this one.

WeRunTings, come on fam, this is a weak effort. its like when Jordan came back. there was still respect among the b-ball fans for what he did for the game but he was playing himself out at that point. the same way EM is doing. he is doing him (mmlp sound and subject matter) but he fell way off and sounds like he is doing a ROCKY 4 on his fans. there are no surprises on this album. he sounds like a washed up boxer making a return on this record.

i aint saying its not a good album (this effort is better than half the shit thats gonna come out this year) just not a good EM album... period!!! you gotta evolve homey... you cant recycle the same material and dump it on us when we have a good reference of the best shit you first dropped (ala NaS). call a spade a spade and stop the stannery otherwise artists will continue to drop lame albums cos they know the fans will cop it regardless, on the account of nostalgia.

What?! By this reasoning the musical content of a piece comes effectively before its lyrical meaning? So I could release a tune that was literally the best musically, and you would HAVE to give it a good review, even though the lyrics could be supremely racist/retarded/nonsense/sexist/any other thing people might disagree with.

I thought the original review was good, and whether this post is being sent to some nobody or the "real" Ortiz it still entertained me for the time it took to read it, plus a CJ theme would be supreme. Anyways if your gonna disagree with a review write your own, its the internets no ones going to stop you.

  58. I've been reading these responses, and some rediculous stuff is being said here. Bottom line is that in this man's opinion, this record was not good. He is entitled to it, and nothing is going to change that. That is part of what is wrong with hip hop. No one is allowed to have their own opinion. Everyone has to feel the same way everyone else is feeling at that point in time. Its rediculous. And honestly, whether or not a man gives some interview explaining the Xs,Ys, and Zs of his album, it shouldn't change how you feel about it. Wack is wack, PERIOD! I don't care how many excuse Kanye gives for that bullshit he made called 808s and Heartbreak, I don't care about what Em claims he is relapsing for in Relapse, a wack album is a wack album. Plain and simple. If your execution is piss poor, it doesn't matter what the sentiment was behind it, its wack nonetheless. Keep doing you Jack, much love, bottom line

  59. You thought that was Joell Ortiz?

Do you think all these dude's on blog comments sections whose name is Killa or Hov ACTUALLY are Cam and Jay-Z?

And then you caught feelings, jumped in with both feet and wrote a long post.

In the UK, we call people who are easily fooled, like you have been here, "a mug".

  64. the Em stans on this site is hilarious and i agree with Blackneck there's some 2Pac knob-slobbers up in this bitch, the worst kind of "hip-hop" fans i know ... the classic 2Pac/Eminem fan have never heard about Digital Underground or heard "2pacalypse Now" and "Strictly 4 my..." and dont know anything bout Dre's background in NWA and bla bla...
i dont think i ever seen a top 10 rapper list with eminem on it ?? and it makes sense cuz he's not even close to top ten...

  66. Good for you CJ. i respect your apology. I can tell you old school (no diss). if anyone aims darts at me on any level (club, on the street, hell even in the work place) I come at them with fire (without looking like a douche tho' but rather like a aggin you just cant fuck with randomly).

I still agree on the relapse, its a weak effort.
